Traffic Impact Of Sergeant Boehm's Funeral

United States Park Police Sergeant Michael Boehm will be laid to rest on Wednesday December 28, 2011.

This funeral will have substantial impact on traffic in the Burke, VA area and roads leading into downtown Washington, DC.

The funeral will take place on Wednesday December 28, 2011 at 10:00 am at:

This church is off Old Keene Mill Road just west of Lee Chapel Road.

Motorist in the area should expect a large presence of law enforcement personnel arriving for the service.

Commuters for the morning rush hour may be affected and should consider work around routes.

It is anticipated that the processional will leave the church at about 11:30 am. For this processional, many roads will be closed.

Closures will be “rolling” when appropriate but travelers are advised to consider alternate routes. Some routes may be closed for substantial durations.

• Left on Fairfax County Parkway

• Left on ramp to I 395 north HOV

• Left on exit ramp to Washington Blvd/VA Rt 27

Funeral for Sgt. Michael A. Boehm

The United States Park Police is saddened to announce the on duty death of Sergeant Michael Boehm.

Sergeant Boehm was assisting EMS Units at the scene of a critically injured person in the area of 34 th St and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in Washington, DC on December 16, 2011. While at the scene, Sgt. Boehm collapsed and was transported to Georgetown University Hospital. sadly, he died a short time later.

Sgt. Boehm will be buried with full honors. All area law enforcement agencies are invited to participate in the viewing and funeral. The arrangements are as follows;

The public viewing will be held on Tuesday December 27, 2011 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Death of United States Park Police Sergeant

The United States Park Police regrets to announce the line of duty death of Sergeant Michael Boehm .

Sgt. Boehm responded to a call for a man down on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal at 34th Street NW Washington, DC on December 16, 2011.

He was assisting another District 3 officer handling a critically injured person. Our partners from the District of Columbia Fire and EMS were on the scene for the call he originally responded.

As Sgt. Boehm was assisting with the investigation, he collapsed.

The firefighters at that scene immediately provided aid to Sgt. Boehm. They transported him to Georgetown University Hospital where the medical staff continued treatment.

Sadly, these efforts failed to resuscitate Sgt. Boehm and he was pronounced a short time later.

Sergeant Boehm is survived by his wife Corrina and son Christopher.

Sergeant Boehm entered service with the United States Park Police on October 11, 1992.

At this time, memorial arrangements have not been made.

US Park Police Seek Information On Fatal Hit And Run Crash

The United States Park Police is seeking the public’s help with information about a fatal hit and run crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

On Monday, 11/28/11 at about 2:20 am, United States Park Police officers responded to a motor vehicle crash northbound on the Baltimore Washington Parkway south of Powder Mill Rd in Beltsville, MD.

A vehicle driven by Louis Poteat, a 72 year old male Seat Pleasant, MD resident, was struck from the rear. The striking vehicle did not stay on the scene.

Mr. Poteat was transported to an area hospital and died later that morning from injuries sustained in this crash.

The US Park Police is looking for a dark colored Mercedes that likely has front end damage. Our investigation indicates that this vehicle may have been involved in a street race northbound Baltimore Washington Parkway south of Powder Mill Rd. prior to the crash, and may have been involved in the crash. The driver of this Mercedes did not stay on the scene of the crash. The other vehicle in the race was a silver Lexus.

US Park Police Seeks A Wanted Person In Shooting Investigation

The United States Park Police is seeking the public’s help in locating a wanted person.

On November 11, 2011 at about 9:30 pm, the US Park Police investigated a sound of shots fired in the 1600 block of Constitution Avenue NW Washington, DC. This is between the White House and the Washington Monument.

As the investigation unfolded, the US Park Police located a vehicle in the 2300 block of Constitution Avenue. Evidence in the vehicle le to us obtaining an arrest warrant for Oscar Ortega

US Park Police Seek Vehicle For Serious Hit And Run Pedestrian Struck

The United States Park Police is seeking a vehicle wanted for a serious hit and run of a pedestrian on the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

This hit and run happened on November 12, 2011 shortly after 4:00 am northbound Baltimore Washington Parkway south of Maryland Route 410 which is also known as Riverdale Road.

The victim, a 27 year old female from Baltimore, MD, was transported to a local hospital with severe head and neck injuries. This woman was outside of her disabled car when she was was hit by a white or silver minivan or utility van. This van is described as having no rear windows on back doors or flat rear panel. Damage is on the right passenger side of vehicle and may have side view mirror damage. It was last seen travelling northbound on Baltimore Washington Parkway in the area of MD Rt. 410.

Seeking Information In Fatal Pedestrian Hit And Run

The United States Park Police is seeking information about a fatal hit and run pedestrian strike on the Suitland Parkway.

Shortly after midnight on Saturday September 10, 2011, a 27 year old female District of Columbia resident was on foot crossing the westbound Suitland Parkway at Naylor Road.

This woman was struck by a car and fatally injured. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.

Updates to Manassas Events

The National Park Service, Manassas National Battlefield Park will adjust the schedule of programs for the 150th Anniversary of First Manassas on Saturday, July 23, 2011, due to forecast heat and weather conditions.

There will be a Musket Firing Demonstration at 11:00 a.m. and an Artillery Firing Demonstration at 1:00 p.m. The rest of the musket and artillery demonstrations have been cancelled. The Quantico Marine Corps Band will not be playing the 7:00 p.m. concert. That concert will feature the Fort McHenry Guard Fife and Drum Corps.

All other programs, including the 2:00 p.m. interpretive program “The Robinson Farm, an African American Family Caught in the Crossfire” and the 6:00 pm lecture by National Park Service Chief Historian Emeritus Edwin Bearss, will occur as scheduled. The National Park Service Visitor Center, Henry House, Stone House, and Brawner Farm House will remain open. The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile Exhibition will remain open. The bus shuttle will operate from the National Park Service field at Chinn Ridge to the Northern Virginia Community College and then to the Visitor Center and other program areas. Follow signs to the parking area access road opposite the park Visitor Center entrance drive.

Manassas Battlefield Heat Warnings Cause Scheduling Changes

The National Park Service, Manassas National Battlefield Park will adjust programming on Friday, July 22, 2011, due to forecasted Excessive Heat Warnings issued by the National Weather Service. These adjustments are being made for visitor, partner and employee health and safety. From 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., outdoor programs will not be held; however, the National Park Service Visitor Center, Henry House, Stone House, and Brawner Farm House will remain open. Additionally, the Civil War 150 HistoryMobile Exhibition will remain open. All scheduled programming for Friday will continue as planned from 8:00 a.m. until about 2:00 p.m. with shortened presentation periods. Bus shuttle operations will operate from the National Park Service field at Chinn Ridge to the Northern Virginia Community College from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and then to the Visitor Center and other program areas. Follow signs to the parking area access road opposite the park Visitor Center entrance drive.

The 6:00 p.m. program Behind the Lines—War Passes Sudley Springs will be held as scheduled and will depart from Sudley United Methodist Church (adjacent to Tour Stop 5). Parking for this special program will be in the church parking lot. In the event of the need for overflow parking, a shuttle bus service will be provided from the Chinn Ridge field and visitor center parking areas to the church. Handicapped parking for this special program will be in the Sudley United Methodist Church parking lot. The program features a guided walk to Sudley Springs Ford and the historic Thornberry House, led by historian John Hennessy. The 90-minute tour will offer perspectives on the role that the Sudley Springs community and Sudley Church served during the battle. The United States Park Police reunites many children each year after the many big events we patrol. We try to make the reunification as fast and seamless as we can.

You can help us.

One of the best aids we can have is a current photo of your child. This photo can be disseminated to our officers and the media to help find the missing child. Often we find the parents don’t have a recent photo or one that gives us the best details.

Please help us find your child.

Many of us have cell phones and other handheld electronics that can take, store, and send pictures. Please take a close up photo of your child’s face. Use the highest resolution possible and avoid distracting backgrounds.

Also, before you set out for a long day in a big group, take a photo of your child showing what he or she is wearing that day. Accurate clothing descriptions can help in finding your child.

If the police need to help you find your child, you will be able to transfer those photos to us so we can push that data out quickly.

If you take the photos with a cell phone, please strip geotag metadata from the image to protect your privacy and your child’s.

Park Police Looking For Critical Missing Person

The United States Park Police is looking for Beatty STEVENS who has been missing from the Lincoln Memorial since 1:45 pm today.

Mr. STEVENS is a CRITICAL missing person because of several serious medical conditions including non dangerous mental disease and a respiratory condition.

Mr. Stevens is a 48 year old white male 6’1” tall weighing about 220 pounds. He has facial hair. He was last seen wearing a light blue shirt and blue jeans.

Mr. Stevens does not have his medication with him and as such is considered to be an endangered person in need of immediate care.

Seeking Information About A Shooting

The United States Park Police is seeking information about a shooting that happened on the Baltimore Washington Parkway on Sunday June 12, 2011 at about 3:30 am.

This shooting may have been the result of a road rage incident.

On Sunday morning at about 3:30 am, a “party bus” with almost fifty passengers was on eastbound New York Avenue taking the ramp to northbound Baltimore Washington Parkway. There may have been some interactions with another vehicle. The bus stopped on the median strip and a black four door older model BMW stopped in front of the bus.

A passenger from the BMW leaned out of the window and fired a gun at the windshield of the bus.

This round went through the glass but did not strike anyone in the bus.

The US Park Police is looking for a black older model four door BMW with DC tags driven by a black male. The shooter may have been a light complexioned black male wearing a white t shirt.

Park Police Seeking Witnesses To Fatal Car Crash

The United States Park Police is seeking information from anyone who saw a fatal car crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway that happened on Tuesday May 24, 2011.

On Tuesday May 24, 2011, William K. Ward, a 34 year old Washington, DC resident, died in a car crash that happened northbound Baltimore Washington Parkway north of Riverdale Road. This crash happened at about 6:20 pm.

We received a 911 transfer call from a woman who reported some activity on the side of the road that may have involved the deceased driver and another person. Before we were able to capture her contact information, the call was dropped. We would like her to contact the US Park Police.

We also would like to hear from anyone else who may have seen this activity, or saw a car being operated either very slowly or at a high speed in a reckless fashion.

The area where this crash happened can have cell phones routed to several jurisdictions so some callers may have not had their reports transferred to the US Park Police.

Memorial Day Traffic Closures

The United States Park Police will close several streets on Monday May 30, 2011 for the annual Memorial Day Parade.

At 6:00 am, the streets in the National Mall, Jefferson Drive and Madison drive, will be closed from 4th Street to 14th Street.

At about 1:00 pm, Constitution Avenue will be closed between 15th Street and 23rd Street NW.

These closures will be in effect until about 4:00pm.

The parade starts at 2:00 pm.

Other streets in the area will also be closed by our partners with Metropolitan Police, so please check with them for details.

Also on Monday May 30, 2011, there will be a wreath laying at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. For this, Henry Bacon Drive will be closed between Constitution Avenue and Lincoln Memorial Circle between 6:00 am and 3:00 pm.

Rolling Thunder Traffic Closures

At 5:00 am West Potomac Park will be closed between Inlet Bridge and the intersection of 23rd Street and Independence Avenue SW.

There will be United States Park Police Officers in all of these areas to assist motorists and pedestrians.

Visitors to areas affected by these closures, such as the National Mall and the Monuments and Memorials will find public transportation to be the best method to arrive. These visitors should allow some extra time for their trip.

Road Closures For Foot Race

The 2011 Cherry Blossom Footrace takes place on April 3, 2011.

Road closures will go in effect as early as 4:00 am on portions of the route.

The route includes 15th Street between Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue SW, both directions on Independence Avenue between 15th Streets and 23rd Street SW, Lincoln Memorial Circle and Memorial Bridge, north on Rock Creek Parkway to Virginia Avenue, and East and West Potomac Parks.

The route will reopen at 10:30 am with the exception of 15th Street, which will open at 11:30 am.

Sentencing In Maryland

A District of Columbia man was sentenced to a prison term for Possession of Crack Cocaine and Assaulting a United States Park Police Officer. This incident happened on the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER AND POSSESSING CRACK COCAINE

Greenbelt, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Roger W. Titus sentenced Derrick Tarzan Young, age 25, of Washington, D.C., today to 21 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for assaulting a U.S. Park Police officer and possession of crack cocaine.

The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein and Chief Teresa Chambers of the United States Park Police.

According to Young’s guilty plea, on June 10, 2010, an officer of the United States Park Police stopped the vehicle being driven by Young because its brake light was broken. When the officer turned on the lights and siren on his marked police cruiser, Young drove for a substantial distance before coming to a stop.

After the traffic stop, the officer patted down Young and detected a hard object which he believed was drugs. As the officer was trying to handcuff Young, Young threw back his elbow toward the officer and began to run away along the side of the road. The officer pursued Young and grabbed his shirt. Young turned back towards the officer and wrapped his arms around the officer’s waist, near the officer’s gun. After a struggle, the officer finally forced Young to the ground. An off-duty police officer arrived on the scene to assist.

Once Young was in handcuffs, the Park Police officer pulled at Young’s pants. A package fell to the ground which contained 4.5 grams of crack cocaine. At the police station, police seized $280 from Young.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the U.S. Park Police for its work in the investigation and thanked Assistant United States Attorney Hollis Raphael Weisman, who prosecuted the case.

Cherry Blossom Traffic Pattern

The blooms of Cherry Trees around the Tidal Basin will require some traffic pattern changes so that we can have better traffic flow for the viewers.

The traffic pattern change will start on Saturday March 26, 2011 and last until Sunday April 10, 2011. These traffic patterns will be in effect 24 hours a day.

Traffic coming from Maine Avenue onto East Basin Drive, heading towards the Jefferson Memorial, will be required to head down Ohio Drive towards Hains Point.

Vehicles continuing on East Basin Drive will be required to exit onto I-395 south.

Tour buses will be allowed to continue towards the Jefferson Memorial.

Vehicles on Ohio Drive will NOT be allowed to turn westbound onto Buckeye Drive. These cars must continue around Hains Point.

Traffic exiting northbound I 395 at the East Potomac Park/Park Police Exit will be required to turn left onto Buckeye Drive.

All cars on Ohio Drive exiting Hains Point, riverside, must continue along the river towards West Potomac Park and cross Inlet Bridge into West Potomac Park.

All traffic on Ohio Drive in West Potomac Park will be ONE WAY north towards Independence Avenue.

There will be NO southbound traffic on Ohio Drive from Independence Avenue.

Traffic and parking is always difficult when these blossoms peak. The National Park Service and the United States Park Police STRONGLY encourage visitors to use public transportation or bikes to view this incredible display.

Please drive carefully paying attention to the many pedestrians in the area and do not leave valuables in view in your parked car.

Race Closures for March 26, 2011

Several streets administered by the National Park Service will be closed on Saturday March 26, 2011 for a marathon.

Constitution Avenue will close from 15th to 23rd Streets NW at 6:20 am. The Washington, DC Meropolitan Police will close Constitution Avenue from 3rd to 15th Streets NW also.

Constitution Avenue will reopen no later than 10:00 am.

In Anacostia Park, Anacostia Drive will be closed at 7:30 am from South Capital Street to the CSX train crossing. There will be no access to Anacostia Park from Good Hope Road or Nicholson Street. Anacostia Drive will reopen no later than 11:00 am.

US Park Police officers will be in these areas to assist motorists and drivers.

Flooding Possible

The National Weather Service is forcasting significant rains for the Washington area. We could see up to 3 or 4 inches overnight.

With rain recently, the ground is saturated.

There is a chance of roadway flooding, trees coming down, and associated power outages.

While driving, if you come to a flooded road, DO NOT drive into the water.

The road may be washed away or your car may be swept away. It only takes a few inches of swift moving water to carry a car away.

TURN AROUND; DON'T DROWN!!

If you come across downed power lines, stay clear and notify public safety agencies to make them safe.

The United States Park Police is seeking information to identify a deceased person found in the wooded area south of the Suitland Parkway and East of Branch Avenue on 2/06/11.

He is a black male over the age of 45, with a light complexion. He was wearing 4 rings on his left hand and multiple necklaces around his neck. He may have been homeless and may have walked with a limp.

Salazar Makes Law Enforcement Leadership Announcements

Washington, DC – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today announced that Chief of the U.S. Park Police Sal Lauro has agreed to serve as a Senior Advisor, effective January 31, 2011.

In that position, Chief Lauro will work closely with Kim Thorsen, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Law Enforcement, Security and Emergency Management to launch a comprehensive review of all aspects of the Department’s and Bureaus’ law enforcement activities and programs. Chief Lauro and Deputy Assistant Secretary Thorsen will provide recommendations to the Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and Bureau heads on how to strengthen law enforcement throughout the Department and its agencies.

“Sal Lauro is a tremendous asset to the Department and I appreciate his willingness to continue to play a leadership role in our law enforcement programs,” said Salazar. “He exemplifies the professionalism and dedication of our strong and proud Park Police force.”

Salazar lauded Chief Lauro as a highly effective and visionary leader for the Park Police. His accomplishments include improving the level of collaboration between the Park Police and external partners, particularly with respect to our nation’s critical infrastructure.

Secretary Salazar today also announced that the final order of the Merit Systems Protection Board concerning Teresa Chambers will be implemented on January 31. “Chief Lauro has led the Park Police on a positive and ambitious agenda over the last two years,” said Salazar, “and I look forward to Teresa Chambers continuing to advance that agenda.”

United States Park Police Seek To Identify Skeletal Remains

The United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch seeks assistance in identifying skeletal remains.

These remains were found on January 16, 2003 under the eastbound span of the Roosevelt Bridge.

The forensic examination of these skeletal remains indicate the death occurred about six months prior, sometime in the Summer of 2002.

A cause of death was not determined.

A forensic anthropologist determined that these remains are of a black male 30-39 years old, 5'7" to 5'8", and he had an unusual bony growth on the upper left side of his mouth.

This growth (exostosis), would have given him the appearance of a swollen cheek or face. He likely would have had difficulty speaking or eating.

The scene where he was found indicated that he likely was homeless.

The drawing should fairly accurately reflect the bone structure, proportions, and measurements of this person's face.

The drawing shows facial hair. This is based on the premise that he was homeless, and many homeless have this length of facial hair.

Road Rage Results In Serious Charges

Andrew Dunn, a 47 year old Silver Spring, MD resident, was arrested by the United States Park Police and charged with “Assault with Intent to Commit Murder.”

This arrest stems from a road rage incident on Sunday November 7, 2010.

Andrew Dunn and another driver were on Powder Mill Road near the Baltimore Washington Parkway on November 7 at about 4:30 pm when they exchanged words after the victim was reportedly almost run off the road.

After that, both drivers drove away with the eventual victim, following Dunn and talking with the police dispatcher, describing what happened. A short time later, both drivers came to a stop, and Dunn fired a handgun at the victim.

The gunfire did not strike the victim or his car.

The victim was able to provide US Park Police Detectives with identifying information and a description. The Detectives tracked the suspect with this information.

On Tuesday November 9, 2010, United States Park Police Detectives and SWAT Team executed a search warrant at Dunn’s home in the Briggs Chaney area of Silver Spring and recovered evidence linking him to the crime.

Dunn was arrested and charged in United States District Court for the Southern District of Maryland.

Dunn is being held pending further court proceedings.

Checkpoint Strikeforce

The United States Park Police and the Washington Regional Alcohol Program teamed up for the kick off of Operation Checkpoint Strikeforce to combat drunk driving.

This event took place on October 28, 2010.

This effort is designed to combat the scourge of drunk driving with a particular focus of the increase of offenses in the upcoming holiday season.

Washington Regional Alcohol Program also provides a “Sober Ride” service where taxis are contracted to return people home who otherwise might be drunk drivers.

For this event, we had a strong media presence getting our message out. We featured highly visual demonstrations of what drunk drivers look like and how their psychomotor skills are impacted.

Officers from the United States Park Police Traffic Safety Unit solicited volunteers to consume measured alcohol doses and submit to period testing of breath alcohol levels and Standardized Field Sobriety tests. These results vividly demonstrated to the reporters the challenges in detecting drunk drivers, but also the skills police officers have developed in combating these offenses.

The demonstration included drivers navigating a cone course while wearing “Fatal Vision” eyewear. These lenses simulate a specific blood alcohol level, in this case .17% bac. Many cones were knocked down; each could have been an innocent pedestrian.

While many may think that getting volunteers to drink alcohol is just a fun way to spend a day, the reasons are deadly serious. The volunteers seemed to enjoy themselves, but they were required to submit to stringent internal controls. These volunteers were required to be transported to and from their homes by police personnel, submit to a basic medical screening before and after the event, and were precluded from operating any vehicles for a specific time period.

This event happened on Hains Point in Washington, DC. Since this area is declared off limits for alcohol consumption by the Superintendant, the United States Park Police received a waiver for the event to allow only the two volunteers to drink for educational and public awareness purposes under close monitoring.

Restoring Sanity Event Critical Missing Person

The missing person is Gladys GERMAIN

Black Female

69 years old

Height 4’10” Weight unknown

She was last seen wearing a puffy black coat and a black baseball cap.

She speaks with what is described as a Caribbean accent, native of Haiti.

She resides in New York City and was in Washington, DC for the event on the National Mall.

She is considered CRITICAL MISSING as she has dementia.

Award From Anti-Defamation League

The United States Park Police is proud to be the recipient of the Anti-Defamation League's "Shield Award."

This award recognizes law enforcement professionals for their significant contributions of protecting people from hate groups, hate crimes, extremism, and terrorism.

The United States Park Police received two of these awards.

The first award was to the Force as a whole for its response to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum shooting in June 2009.

The second award was to Detective Kevin Fornshill for his ongoing and long term investigations of hate crimes.

The United States Park Police was the first uniformed law enforcement agency on the scene of the terrorist assault on the museum. Our officers secured the scene, initiated the investigation, assisted in the building's evacuation, and handled the incident until the death of Special Police Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns turned this scene into a homicide to be handled by the Metropolitan Police Department.

Detective Kevin Fornshill has handled investigations into hate groups and individuals, provided training to our agency as well as many others concerning hate crimes, and is considered a subject matter expert on these crimes. His long term investigations and intelligence gathering has kept our community safer.

Other recipients of the ADL Shield Award are the Norfolk Police Department Criminal Intelligence Unit, the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Joint Terrorism Task Force CT-4, and Holocaust Memorial Museum Special Police Officers Jason McCuiston and Harry Weeks.

The most moving segment of this awards ceremony was the presentation of this award to Holocaust Memorial Museum Special Police Officer Stephen Johns. Officer Johns received this award posthumously, having been murdered in the line of duty. His mother and son received this award for him.

With several hundred people in attendance, the room was quiet as Officer Johns' mother spoke about her son. Most of us never met her son, but we all know of him and think of him.

Daring Hoist Rescue In Shenandoah National Park

The United States Park Police Aviation personnel made a daring hoist rescue in Shenandoah National Park.

Eagle 1 flew to Stoney Man Mountain on Friday October 8, 2010 at about 7:00 pm to assist National Park Service Rangers with a 66 year old male who had fallen about twenty feet down a cliff and had suffered head trauma. Sergeant Craig Davis piloted the craft with Sergeant David Hurley and Officer Brooke Robbins in the Rescue Technician positions. The NPS Rangers were with the patient at the cliff base.

When Eagle 1's staff located the rescue scene, they found that the sun had almost set and the winds at the cliff face were high and erratic. The NPS Rangers were requested to move the patient nearer the top of the cliff. After the Rangers repositioned the patient, the Eagle's staff hoisted him aboard the aircraft while being buffeted by strong winds.

The patient was flown to Fairfax Hospital where he was treated further.

These types of hoist rescues are difficult, however the United States Park Police trains with surrounding First Responder Units frequently so that they can perform these missions safely.

This mountain is 4011 feet high and located at 38.598 n/78.372 w.

Strong Storms Pound Washington, DC

A powerful line of thunderstorms pounded Washington, DC at the height of morning rush hour August 12, 2010.

This cell passed through at about 7:30 AM. As it approached, the sky became so dark that it appeared night had fallen.

Many trees came down in the Metropolitan area with the District 3 area in Rock Creek Park especially hard hit. Beach Drive was closed its entire length.

Most treacherous were the flash floods. Several vehicle along the Beach Drive corridor were swept away by the flooding. Fortunately there were no injuries.

Bradley Broadus, a District of Columbia resident, was driving his mini van on Broad Branch Road near Brandywine Street.

Mr. Broadus relates, " I looked in my rear view mirror, saw a wall of water coming at me, and bailed out of my car. I scrambled up the hill and clung to a fence when my car washed downstream."

Mr. Broadus' car was found about a quarter of a mile away against the supports for the bridge carrying Ross Drive over the creek.

Officer Farrell of District 3 arrived and waded through high rushing water to see just a corner of the vehicle poking above the torrent. She said that the water was above her knees at the peak of this flood. She was able to break a rear window attempting to see if anyone was in the car. Shortly, Mr. Broadus came down the road to report that he owned the car and that no one was in it.

Within about one half hour, the waters receded to more normal levels and Mr. Broadus' car was winched out of the stream. The District of Columbia Fire Department Rescue Squad 2 personnel assisted in this recovery. While the water had receded substantially, they assisted by hooking the car to the tow truck, stood by if any recovery people were hurt, and monitored the creek for any hazardous spills that may have gone into the water.

The photos show the final resting of Mr. Broadus' car, the DC Fire Department hooking up the car, the amount of damage flash floods can cause, and a very lucky Bradley Broadus!

To get a sense of how deep the water was, when looking at the photo of the car against the bridge, the water was several feet above the bridge deck, about midway up the railing!

Park Police Seek Robbery Suspect

The U.S. Park Police is investigating a Robbery that happened on May 5, 2010 at 2:30 am in “P Street Beach”, Northwest, Washington, DC. “P Street Beach” is a park located at 23rd Street and P Street NW and going down a long hill towards Rock Creek.

The suspect is an Hispanic male, with a thin beard, wearing black pants, blue t-shirt, black striped hat and carrying a black backpack with a Nike swoosh and black string shoulder straps.

The suspect stole the victim’s wallet and used his stolen credit card throughout the Dupont Circle area.

Weekend Road Closures June 19th and 20th

• 3:30 am – 4:00 pm West Potomac Park will be closed. Tourmobile will be given access as soon as the road is cleared even if it is closed to other traffic

• 5:00 am – 11:00 am the following closures will take place:

Potomac River Haz Mat

United States Park Police Aviation personnel patrol National Park Service lands from the unique perspective of the air.

This vantage point furthers our mission of public safety, Icon protection, and preservation of natural resources.

Aviation patrols on June 8, 2010 touched on all three of these elements.

Aviation Sergeants Kevin Chittick and Chris Perkins completed their patrols of the downtown Washington, DC area and moved up the Potomac River towards Great Falls National Park where two people drowned the week before.

After clearing this treacherous river area, they headed down river for continued checks of the National Mall when they spotted a hazardous material situation impacting on NPS land.

These two saw a cloudy substance in the Potomac River near Little Falls Dam. The source was difficult to locate, however their diligent search indicated that the origin was near the reservoir that supplies drinking water for Washington, DC and Arlington, VA.

United States Park Police ground units and District of Columbia Fire Department staff followed the sightings reported by US Park Police Aviation and confirmed the origin as a facility managed by the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority.

The Fire Department HazMat teams sampled the product and determined it to be “an organic substance” not dangerous to flora or fauna.

As this product was in proximity to the C and O Canal and flowing into the Potomac River, United States Park Police Detectives from our Environmental Crimes Unit will follow up the initial investigation to determine if further study is needed.

Rolling Thunder Road Closures

Several roads will be closed on Sunday May 30, 2010 to accommodate the “Rolling Thunder” event.

At about 11:30 am, the following roads will be closed. They are expected to be reopened at about 3:30 pm.

• Memorial Bridge and Memorial Avenue from Route 110 to Arlington Memorial Circle
• Ohio Drive from Independence Avenue to Virginia Avenue
• Ohio Drive, riverside, from Inlet Bridge to Independence Avenue
• Independence Avenue from 1st Street SW to 23rd Street SW
• Constitution Avenue from Pennsylvania Avenue NW to 23rd Street NW
• 3rd, 4th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 15th 17th, and 23rd Streets between Independence Avenue and Constitution Avenue and one block north of Constitution Avenue and one block south of Independence Avenue at those streets
• Henry Bacon Drive and Daniel French Drive

There will be United States Park Police Officers in all of these areas to assist motorists and pedestrians.

Visitors to areas affected by these closures, such as the National Mall and the Monuments and Memorials will find public transportation to be the best method to arrive. These visitors should allow some extra time for their trip.

With an average of 8 fatal traffic crashes a year on the Baltimore Washington Parkway, the United States Park Police is increasing enforcement for seatbelt usage on this roadway.

Traffic Safety Unit Crash Reconstructionists have identified a lack of seat belt usage as a major factor in about half of these fatal crashes.

We firmly believe that a combination of education and enforcement will assist in reducing this toll.

The rate of compliance with seatbelt usage in Maryland, at 94%, is the highest on the East Coast.

The Baltimore Washington Parkway has a compliance rate slightly lower than Maryland’s average at about 90%.

Unbelted passengers die in traffic crashes because they are ejected from vehicles or are severely tossed around inside crashing cars.

Seatbelts will save lives.

Those refusing to use seatbelts claim a false sense of security because their cars have airbags. Airbags are a supplemental restraint system - just that, a supplement-not the whole safety package.

Some refuse to use seatbelts because they fear being trapped in a crashed car.

This is simply misplaced logic.

Should you be involved in a serious crash, your chances for survival are substantially increased if you wear a seatbelt.

Wearing a seatbelt costs nothing; receiving a ticket for not wearing one will cost you.

Crashing a car without a seatbelt may cost you and your friends and family everything.

Shooting On Baltimore-Washington Parkway

United States Park Police Detectives are looking for a suspect who shot and wounded a motorist on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Shortly after 11:00 pm on Sunday May 23, 2010, a motorist driving a red sedan struck another vehicle from behind. The operator of this striking vehicle, after rear ending the other vehicle, fled the scene of this crash. This crash happened on Maryland Route 198 west of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

After fleeing the scene of the crash, the striking vehicle entered the Baltimore-Washington Parkway southbound from Route 198. The vehicle that was rear ended followed the fleeing vehicle onto the Parkway.

The struck vehicle pulled alongside the fleeing vehicle and a passenger in the struck vehicle fired upon the fleeing vehicle with a gun.

The operator of the fleeing vehicle was shot several times in the arm. This adult male sustained NON-life threatening injuries. The adult male passenger in this vehicle was not injured.

The vehicle containing the shooter may be an SUV and it may be black in color.

Credit cards were stolen from a parked car.

These credit cards were used in several stores in Silver Spring, MD and Greenbelt, MD.

The suspect we are looking for was video taped by store security cameras using the stolen credit cards.

We are looking to identify a white male appearing to be 30 – 40 years old, heavy set, and possibly balding or having a very short hair cut.

US Park Police Looking For Theft Suspect

The United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch is seeking a suspect who has used stolen credit cards and checks.

These credit cards and checks were stolen from a parked car on Saturday March 6, 2010. The car was parked at the Thompson’s Boat Center Parking Lot which is located near the intersection of Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Avenue NW Washington, DC.

We are looking for a black male 40 to 50 years old who appears to be about 6’5” tall.

The photographs were developed from video in the stores in which the suspect apparently used the stolen credit cards.

US Park Police Seek Sexual Assault Suspect

The United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch is seeking a suspect wanted for a sexual assault that happened in Rock Creek Park.

This assault happened on the Holly Trail, which is a trail through the wood in Rock Creek Park near 16th Street and Holly Street NW.

The assault happened on Saturday May 1, 2010 shortly after 2:00 pm.

The victim was grabbed from behind, wrestled to the ground and assaulted. The assailant was armed with a knife. The victim believes she may have been successful in turning the assailant's knife on the attacker and cutting his hand. She also may have bitten the assailant's hand.

The United States Park Police is seeking an Hispanic male in his twenties with a dark complexion. This suspect is about 5'6" tall and slender build. He has dark curly hair. He was wearing a blue polo shirt, blue jeans, and a black ball cap with a white emblem on it. He also was riding a black mountain bike.

Honoring The Fallen

Every year we join togethor at Saint Patrick's Church in Washington, DC to celebrate the lives of those who made the supreme sacrifice in law enforcement.

Command staff, line officers, honor guards, mounted units, motor units, and pipe and drum units from all of the area police and law enforcement agencies present a moving and dignified image for those who share the sense of loss to our community.

While the officers and the public can see the pagentry, we are here for those who watch from above, those who are our eternal back up.

As the service begins and the units march into postition, many passers by inquire as to what is happening. The response they make upon learning is a solemn glance at these units, a slow nod, and a sincere thank you.

Water Rescue Training

Professional athletes claim that the way they train is the way they play.

It is no different for First Responders.

The United States Park Police Aviation staff trains on an ongoing basis with partners from the agencies we work with daily.

On May 2, 2010, the District of Columbia Fire Department, Washington, DC Police Department Harbor Patrol, and the US Park Police Aviation conducted water rescue training in the Anacostia River.

For this drill, a vehicle was submerged upside down with people trapped, and another victim floating away.

The Police and Fire boats responded and deployed divers for the rescue. US Park Police Aviation arrived to hoist a victim from the waters.

The Aviation staff made a sucessful recovery with a hoist operation into the aircraft.

United States Park Police Aviation has a long history of difficult rescues resolved well. These pilots and paramedics have rightfully received significant recognition for these operations.

They play the way they train.

This training session was done on a hot and steamy morning. The EMS providers will tell us that proper hydration is critical to good health. That includes our canine partners with the DC Fire Department Search and Rescue Unit!

Newly Trained Mounted Officers

Serious Bus Crash West Potomac Park

Two buses collided in West Potomac Park on Friday April 30 leaving two injured

This crash happened on Ohio Drive at about 11:00 am and involved a head on collision.

One bus appears to have crossed onto the wrong side of Ohio Drive and struck what appears to be a stopped bus.

The driver of the stopped bus was able to get out of his bus and was treated by District of Columbia Fire Department personnel. He was transported to George Washington University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The operator of the other bus was tightly pinned in the wreckage. DC Fire Department crews used saws, prying tools, and hydraulic spreaders to remove large parts of the front of this bus to free the driver. This extrication took almost one hour.

United States Park Police Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists are investigating this scene to ascertain causative factors.

Ice Rescue/Hoist Training

Interagency training is an ongoing and necessary event to keep our first responders current and skilled in difficult evolutions.

The United States Park Police and the Montgomery County Maryland Department of Fire and Rescue Services work very frequently with each other, at times, on a daily basis. Water rescues and ice rescues are an example of difficult missions that both agencies are tasked with.

United States Park Police Aviation spends many flight hours patrolling the Potomac River. Often our Aviation Section is involved in rescues of swimmers in trouble, boaters who have been separated from their craft, and climbers and hikers who are injured on cliffs along the Potomac River.

Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services has one of the most proficient teams of firefighters and medics to mitigate these incidents. The MCDFRS Swift Water teams have boats, ropes, swimmers, climbers, and medics who boldly plunge into dangerous waters to make many saves every year.

Often, the areas they work in are difficult to access for rescues and patient extrications. The best tool to finalize the rescue or locate victims is from the air. This is where the United States Park Police Aviation teams enter the rescue scenario.

Our helicopters are crewed by personnel who will fly into challenging areas such as in the Potomac Gorge where winds can be erratic and perform hoists of patients or insertions of swimmers. After the rescue, our Paramedics will treat and transport the patients.

It is critical that these teams work together BEFORE these difficult rescues are needed. The flight and ground crews must learn good communications skills with each other, make certain all radio frequencies will never fail, understand each others’ safety needs, concerns, and protocols, and even get to know each other to develop comfort and trust in the others’ skills.

February 17, 2010 turned out to be a great day to test these needs. The mission was ice rescue from frozen bodies of water combined with hoist techniques into the helicopter. The ground training at Montgomery County, Maryland Fire Station 14 was extensive. Since this training can be hazardous, much time was spent on skills including ropes, knots, patient/victim approaches, securing techniques for the patient, and advanced medical treatments for the hypothermic victim. While this is critical for “real” scenarios, it is also critical in training. Safety officers were identified, distress messages passed along, interagency communications systems tested, tethers implemented, and many repeated admonitions about the need for personal flotation devices. No trainee or trainer would approach the scene without the proper safety equipment…No exceptions!

After the ground training, all participants met at the side of United States Park Police helicopter Eagle 1 for a flight briefing. This included evacuation procedures, hoist safety, fire safety, and proper approaches.

Now, everyone was ready to go out on the ice.

After meeting at a local golf course with a pond, the trainers (properly secured for safety!) used a saw to cut a hole in the 6” thick ice.

The “victims” wore dry suits and flotation devices and they enjoyed an invigorating swim in a pond with a hole in the ice.

When Eagle 1 approached, the rescuers secured the victim and prepared the hoist. Up went the victim in the Billy Pugh rescue net!

All participants learned quite a bit about ice rescue and helicopter hoisting operations. This training advanced the ongoing interagency working of the United States Park Police and the Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

None of the victims who spent time in the ice hole turned down the hot coffee after they got off the aircraft!

Cabin Fever

The Big Dig

Now that the Blizzard of 2010 has abated, the United States Park Police is digging out.

We maintained our normal complement of patrols throughout these challanging times, securing Icons and Memorials, providing Parkway patrols, and all of our regular duties, but we ramped up the additional public safety work of checking for stranded visitors.

Many of our officers spent several days living at the various stations, sleeping on cots, and fueling their bodies with MREs.

Our dispatchers never let the radio system become compromised with many long hours.

Aviation was utilized in Loudoun County, Virginia when the county Sheriff's Office was concerned that there may be missing drivers mired in snow and unable to be located except from above.

SWAT and Motors continued to provide escorts for the various dignitaries they routinely protect.

We benefitted from the extra efforts of our partners within the National Park Service, most especially the roadway and tree crews who cleared many miles of roads, moved and cut hundreds of downed trees, and at times, plowed a path for our patrols to respond to the police calls in hard to reach areas.

We are very proud of all of our staff for an incredibly well done job under trying conditions!

Unusual Snow Preparations

Bread. Check.

Milk. Check.

Shovel. Check.

Movie DVDs. Check.

It seems like you are completely prepared for a long wait in your home during the snow. That may be true, but for United States Park Police officers, we need to do many additional preparations. Our patrols must go on, but we have some peculiar needs that must be met.

Consider our horses assigned to the Mounted Patrol.

Our horses need feed, water, and daily care. This requires an additional commitment from the Mounted officers. These officers are deployed for regular patrol duties to supplement the “street” officers with the increased calls for service, but the horses will remain well cared for.

While everyone else is at home watching DVDs and eating bread and drinking their milk, United States Park Police officers make frequent checks of our stables to assure the integrity of the roofs, make certain power stays on so that a heat loss will not freeze up the waterers, and check the welfare of the animals.

The Mounted officers must muck the stalls, provide hay for twenty four hour grazing, and provide two well balanced meals of Dietrich pellet grain daily for our charges.

The stock piles of shavings we use for bedding generally is frozen up and not accessible through the drifts, so we switch to baled shavings that we can carry on our shoulders. Hay must be moved from the lofts and storage sheds to the stalls. Grain needs to be distributed about. Manure is toted a bit away from the stalls where it will be piled for later removal.

Some of our facilities require frequent plow trips so access can be maintained for this important care.

Prior to events such as the blizzard conditions we are now seeing, our Mounted officers made certain that all medical supplies were up to date with bandaging materials and any pharmaceuticals that could be needed in an emergency were readily available. We must assume that if a veterinarian is needed, it could take a while for a response.

While you are at home hopefully enjoying this snow please remember the many additional steps your public safety personnel is doing to maintain operations.

Historic Snowfall In Washington, DC

Historic snowfall in the Washington, DC area brought many challenges to public safety personnel. This snowfall began on Friday February 5, 2010 and continued until late Saturday February 6, 2010. Most of the roadways were at times completely impassable because the almost two feet of snow coupled with snow fall rates at times about 4 inches per hour almost overwhelmed the plowing equipment. This snow was also very moist and dense. The weight of the snow brought down hundreds of trees, obstructing many roadways and downing power lines.

The United States Park Police responded with a vast array of resources. Many of the areas we patrol in the Washington area have desolate sections that concern us during such weather conditions because hikers, visitors, and motorists could get stranded making it difficult to locate them. To assure that we keep our community safe, one of our important resources to patrol the deserted areas is aerial surveillance by United States Park Police Aviation.

Clearly these patrols were initially limited by the snowfall and poor visibility, but as soon as Aviation could fly, they made a detailed assessment of the storm’s impact. Some of the patrols were in the downtown Washington, DC area, a flight up the Potomac River to Great Falls, Fort Washington Park, the areas near Mount Vernon, East Potomac Park and Haines Point, and the Potomac River itself. The river patrols allow us to look for anybody who may have become stranded in or near the river and also to assess navigation hazards for the boaters using the Potomac River.

Closing of Memorials

The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorials are all closed to visitation. This decision was made to assure public safety.

It is a better use of National Park Service assets to have personnel clearing roadways and mitigating severe storm impact such as downed trees.

Mass Arrests At White House

These defendants were charged with violations of demonstration regulations.

They have been transported to a United States Park Police facility for processing.

Construction On Rock Creek Parkway

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority advises that construction will impact traffic on Rock Creek Parkway.

The DC Water and Sewer Authority (DC WASA) has informed the United States Park Police that utility work scheduled for the next two – three months will require a temporary lane closure on Rock Creek Parkway. The closure will be limited to off-peak hours, but traffic delays are still possible and motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes if possible.

The DC WASA construction is part of their Rock Creek Sewer Separation and Water Main Replacement project, CSO 037. Work will begin Monday, January 25, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and will take a minimum of 60 days to complete.

During construction, the northbound lane on Rock Creek Parkway will be closed for about 500 feet at Waterside Drive, N.W. Standard traffic control devices will be in place.

Fatal Car Crash in Rock Creek

One person died in a motor vehicle crash on the Rock Creek Parkway south of P Street NW Washington, DC.

United States Park Police units were dispatched to this area on January 3, 2010 at about 10:22 am. The caller stated that the vehicle that crashed into Rock Creek would be difficult to see as it was upside down in the water with only a wheel visible.

The responding officers spent about ten minutes looking for the car as it was extremely difficult to see.

The water had frozen around the car and the flowing portions of the creek brought pieces of ice with it.

District of Columbia Fire and EMS personnel entered the water to attempt a rescue. They fought through waist deep icy water, uncertain footing, and a swift flowing stream to break into the submerged car. These Firefighters removed the lone occupant.

This occupant was transported to George Washington University Hospital. Despite the occupant being submerged for an unknown time, resuscitation efforts took place. At times, people submerged for lengthy or undetermined times with frigid conditions can be resuscitated.

Despite these rescue and medical efforts, the occupant died.

In Memory Of Fallen Officers

The eighteen new officers joining the ranks of the United States Park Police had their last training run as recruits downtown around the monuments and memorials they will soon protect.

Physical fitness is paramount for police officers and this run only added to their high level of conditioning.

Since the commanders of the United States Park Police firmly believe in leading by example, the Chief of Police, a Deputy Chief of Police, two Majors, and a Captain joined the newest members of the Force for this fitness run.

Fitness is critical, however equally important is the sense of community all officers must share. This family of law enforcement must never forget those officers who gave their lives serving with us. The new officers were told of those United States Park Police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the people they serve.

Bringing this point home firmly was the presence of the surviving son of one of our fallen.

Hakim Farthing died in the line of duty on August 10, 2002. He is survived by his now eleven year old son, Eric.

Eric met the new officers and followed them as they ran the National Mall. When the runners finnished at Headquarters, Eric was presented with the recruit class "guidon."

This run clearly established the link all of us have with those who served before.

Eric will always be part of our family.

Fatal Crash On Suitland Parkway

One person died in a crash on the Suitland Parkway.

This crash happened on Monday December 14, 2009 at about 6:37 am eastbound Suitland Parkway at Meadowview Drive, which is between Silver Hill Road and Forestville Road in Suitland, Maryland.

The decedent, 32 year old Shawn Bowman of Suitland, Maryland sustained critical injuries in the crash where his vehicle overturned. He was transported to Prince Georges Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland by Prince Georges County Fire Department ambulance. Shortly after his arrival at Prince Georges Hospital Center, he succumbed to the injuries.

The other vehicle involved in the crash was occupied by an adult female and a baby, both of whom sustained non life threatening injuries, and transported to Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland.

United States Park Police Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists are investigating this crash.

Fatal Crash Baltimore Washington Parkway

One person is dead following a car crash northbound on the Baltimore Washington Parkway at Maryland Route 198.

This crash happened at about 5:00 am on Friday December 11, 2009.

The crash involved one vehicle occupied only by the driver. The car left the roadway and struck the stone bridge abutment head on.

The driver, David A. WEEDON, 52 years old from Laurel, Maryland, died at the scene.

United States Park Police Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists are investigating this scene to ascertain causitive factors.

Fallen Tree Snarls Rush Hour On The GWMP

A large tree fell across the George Washington Memorial Parkway at the height of morning rush hour.

On Tuesday November 24, 2009, shortly before 7:00 am, the tree fell across the northbound lanes near Turkey Run. This tree fell on six cars. Fortunately, no one in the cars was injured.

This snarled traffic for about two and one half hours while the National Park Service tree crews sawed and chipped the tree. All traffic was diverted onto Rt. 123 at McLean.

Apparently saturated ground from recent rains loosened the tree.

Family Seeking Closure In Theft Of Loved One's Remains

A bronze cremation urn containing the remains of a decorated US Army veteran was stolen from a parked car in the 300 block of Jefferson Drive SW Washington, DC on November 12, 2009. This theft occurred between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Initially the theft was reported to the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department; however this incident occurred on jurisdiction of the United States Park Police.

The stolen urn is 8.5” X 5.5” X 5.5” in size, manufactured in bronze, with a cross on the lower right front.

United States Park Police Detectives are making the recovery of this urn and contents a priority to assist the family with the mourning process and crime victimization.

While closure of all criminal incidents is paramount, we understand that simply recovering this item is more important.

A reward is offered to anyone with information about this theft or information about the whereabouts of the urn and contents.

Should anyone possess this urn and desire to help close this unfortunate tragedy for this family and wishes to remain anonymous, he or she is asked to contact their local police department and describe where we may find the urn.

Pedestrian Struck on National Mall Dies

One person is dead after being struck by a car on the National Mall.

Richard Greenstein and his wife Rhonda Ratner were crossing Madison Drive at 12th Street in the National Mall on Sunday November 15, 2009 at about 12:00 pm. Both were in the marked crosswalk. A vehicle backing up on Madison Drive struck both of these pedestrians. Both Richard Greenstein and Rhoda Ratner were injured after being struck and were transported to George Washington University Hospital.

Rhonda Ratner was treated and released with minor injuries.

Richard Greenstein was admitted to the hospital and succumbed to his injuries on Monday November 16, 2009. Mr. Greenstein is a 76 year old male from Northwest Washington, DC.

United States Park Police Crash Reconstructionists and Detectives are investigating this incident.

The driver of the striking vehicle remained on the scene for the investigation.

The driver’s name is not being released at this time pending consultation with the United States Attorney’s Office.

The cause of death will be determined after examination by the Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.

Unusual Crash Near Arlington Cemetary

A taxi driving on Memorial Avenue near Arlington National Cemetary lost control on wet pavement, jumped a curb, crossed a sidewalk and struck the concrete rail of the bridge that takes Memorial Avenue over the southbound George Washington Parkway.

When the taxi struck the railing, it knocked out about ten of the concrete vertical posts and pushed them off the bridge. These heavy concrete pieces crashed to the Parkway below; fortunately they did not strike any cars. This is a drop of about twenty five feet.

The concrete railing remained intact, however it was not secure enough to allow traffic to flow below.

Traffic has been diverted on the southbound George Washington Parkway to Theodore Roosevelt Bridge until National Park Service personnel can stabilize this heavy concrete rail.

Besides the rail damage and damage to the taxi, one vehicle below struck a large piece and sustained undercarriage damage.

No one was hurt.

Pedestrian Fatality Suitland Parkway

One pedestrian is dead after being struck by two vehicles in the intersection of Suitland Parkway at Naylor Road in Temple Hills, Maryland.

On November 11, 2009 at about 2:27 am, United States Park Police Officers responded to this crash, and found that two vehicles travelling together struck this pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to Prince Georges Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland with multiple critical injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

The striking vehicles are owned and operated by the United States Secret Service. The operators of these vehicles remained on the scene for the investigation.

The decedent has been identified as Larry Donnall Moore from Temple Hills, Maryland.

United States Park Police Crash Reconstructionists and Detectives are investigating this incident. No causative factors have been determined yet.

One person is dead following an overnight car crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

Jabari OUTTZ, a 32 year old Greenbelt, Maryland resident, died in a single vehicle car crash southbound on the Baltimore Washington Parkway north of New York Avenue. This crash happened on 10/31/09 at about 3:30 am.

Mr. OUTTZ was a passenger in a vehicle that was travelling northbound on the Baltimore Washington Parkway. This vehicle crossed the center median of the Parkway and came to rest in the southbound lanes.

Mr. OUTTZ was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver was transported to Prince Georges Hospital Center with minor injuries.

There were no other occupants in the car.

This car crash is being investigated by United States Park Police Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists.

The driver’s name will be released when authorized by United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch.

No, that comment is not directed towards the driver from his or her companion.

Deer are a hazard on all roads in the Washington Metropolitan area, but more especially in the fall. This is the Rut, or deer breeding season. Deer are very active and they tend to focus more on the next generation than on traffic safety!

The United States Park Police sees an increase in collisions with deer on all of our roadways. Clearly there are large numbers of deer on the Parkways outside of the city, but we see deer even in our downtown areas.

Some things to keep in mind while driving that can help prevent or mitigate deer collisions:

• Deer are especially active pre-dawn to mid-morning and dusk to early evening.

• Deer typically travel in herds. If you see one, likely more are around.

• Always drive the posted speed limit. This will give you more time to see deer in the roadway.

• Always wear your seat belt when in a vehicle. It is the law, but it clearly increases the survivability of any crash including those with deer.

• Watch for eye shine along roadsides. As you approach deer, often you will see the glimmer of their eyes.

• Be aware of posted “Deer Crossing” signs. These are placed in areas where many deer have typically been seen. No, the Police and wildlife management people have not trained the deer to cross in these areas, despite the jokes!

• Never swerve to avoid deer on the road. Our officers have seen instances where drivers have crashed into trees and ditches avoiding deer, resulting in injury.

Marine Corps Marathon Street Closures

The Marine Corps Marathon will be run this Sunday, October 25, 2008. The race begins at 8 a.m. in Arlington, Virginia, and then crosses the Potomac River into the District. The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Park Police will close numerous streets along the race route in the District between 4 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Fatal Pedestrian Crash Baltimore Washington Parkway

The United States Park Police is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway.

Shortly after 1:00 am on October 10, 2009, a pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles on the ramp from southbound Baltimore Washington Parkway to westbound New York Avenue, which leads to Northeast Washington, DC.

The victim in this crash is an Hispanic male in his mid thirties. He is about 5’ to 5’3” tall and weighs about 125 pounds. At the time of this crash, the victim was wearing a white t shirt with blue crossed ax images and the wording “Semper Paratus” beneath as the front image. On the back is a smaller image of the same blue crossed axes and the wording “Royal Ruthlessness.”

This pedestrian was struck by multiple vehicles, which remained on the scene.

Because of the complexity of this crash reconstruction, the United States Park Police Criminal Investigators would like to talk to any person who may have seen the victim or scene.

Further, the victim possessed documents which may indicate he was of Guatemalan origin, however, there are conflicting issues which have precluded a positive identification. Should anyone know the identity of this victim, we ask that they contact the United States Park Police.

Theft From Auto Suspects

The United States Park Police is investigating several thefts from vehicles that were parked in the Good Luck Road parking area of Greenbelt Park.

These offenses occurred from April until August of 2009.

The investigation has located several store videos of people making purchases with credit cards stolen from these parked vehicles. The identity of these suspects is not known.

The United States Park Police is working with the Prince Georges County Police, Montgomery County Police, and Maryland National Capital Park Police who have similar open cases.

Anyone with knowledge of these offenses or the identity of the people in the photographs, or known to operate the pictured vehicle is requested to contact United States Park Police Detective Michael Horman at (202) 610-8759 or the United States Park Police Tip Line at (202) 610-8737.

Remembering A Lost Officer

Again we reflect on an Officer who gave his life serving with the United States Park Police.

September 25 marks the anniversary of the loss of Officer Michael Petrella.

Officer Petrella was killed in a motorcycle accident on Memorial Bridge in Washington, DC, during a period of rain. His motorcycle struck the side of a car next to him. He was transported to George Washington Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officer Petrella had served with the agency for 6 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and mother.

US Park Police Officers Help Cancer Charity

On August 28, 2009 the United States Park Police held the 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to honor members of the Force that have had cancer and lost that fight. All money raised during the event goes to Johns Hopkins Cancer Research Hospital. In the nine years since the inception of the tournament, the United States Park Police has raised and donated over $150,000 dollars for cancer research at Johns Hopkins.

In addition to the annual golf tournament, this year a local Harley Davidson distributor donated a 2009 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle for raffle. The drawing was held at the conclusion of the tournament during the awards banquet. The chairman of the golf tournament, Sergeant Franz Ferstl, asked a cancer patient from Johns Hopkins, Zoe Boone, to come to the tournament and draw the winning raffle ticket for the motorcycle.

Zoe Boone was diagnosed with Leukemia when she was 6 years old and was fortunate to have a bone marrow match with her sister, Maxine. After the transplant, Zoe spent an entire year in the hospital recovering. Doctors are hopeful she will be in remission soon. Zoe lives with her dad Vincent and sister Maxine in Bowie, Maryland. She is very serious about her school studies and her future. Zoe hopes to one day join the WNBA as a professional basketball player as well as pursue a career as a famous fashion model and designer.

Love On The Rocks

Two local residents had a rocky start to their future together.

While hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Great Falls Park in Potomac, Maryland, on September 6, 2009 the couple paused to admire the beautiful scenery. The setting was perfect on a late summer day with the sun glinting off the Potomac River below, the breeze pushing through the thick tree canopy, and the grey rocky trail weaving up and down with steep crevasses and a long drop to the water.

The setting was perfect for a hike, but also for more romantic purposes…

A marriage proposal!

Without question many couples have become engaged in this area, however, this engagement also engaged the services of the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Fire and Rescue Services and the United States Park Police Aviation Section.

The bride to be was swept off her feet.

After the magic moment, she slipped on the rocks and fell a short distance. This fall left her with head and chest injuries.

Montgomery County Fire medics could only reach her by boat followed by a scramble up a steep rock face. After the medics evaluated the patient and packaged her on a back board and stokes basket, they realized that she would either need to be lowered down the steep rocks or carried over a mile of rough terrain. Neither option was good considering her injuries.

This is where United States Park Police Aviation personnel excel in difficult technical rescue operations.

Eagle 2 with Sgt. Kevin Chittick in command, Sgt. Ken Burchell as co-pilot, and Sgt. Chris Perkins working the medic/rescue technician position responded to perform a hoist rescue of the patient.

Hoist rescues are difficult and dangerous as the aircraft must remain at a hover with minimal movement that would injure the patient. Should an engine failure happen, the pilot has few options for recovery with no forward air speed on the aircraft. Despite these dangers, United States Park Police Aviation practices this skill and the personnel are well equipped to perform a hoist.

The patient was hoisted aboard Eagle 2 and transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland.

An adult female was treated for head and chest injuries and later released.

The injured woman slipped on the rocks even though she was properly attired for rough hiking wearing appropriate footwear and clothing. It was simply an accident.

Prior to her fall this woman answered the question posed to her.

“Yes!”

United States Park Police Officer Injured in Crash on the Baltimore Washington Parkway

On Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at approximately 7:37 a.m., a United States Park Police officer with nineteen years of service was injured while on a traffic stop in the safety shoulder of the Baltimore Washington Parkway southbound lanes, south of Route 197.

The officer was standing outside the violator’s vehicle speaking to the operator when his cruiser was struck by a truck that had left the southbound roadway, traveled onto the safety shoulder, and rear ended the Force cruiser pushing it into the violator’s vehicle.

At the time of impact, the officer was pulled under his cruiser and dragged for approximately 40 feet along the road surface before the vehicle finally came to a stop. The officer was pinned under his cruiser until rescuers could remove him. He was transported by the United States Park Police Helicopter to the Washington Hospital Center with non life threatening injuries.

This case is being investigated by the United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch.

Difficult Aviation Rescue

One hiker on Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park is safe following a difficult hoist rescue by United States Park Police Aviation Eagle 2.

Eagle 2 was dispatched to Old Rag Mountain on August 11, 2009 at about 10:00 am to help National Park Service Rangers in extracting an injured person. The Park Rangers were responding to a hiker who had injured his leg in a fall. These Rangers knew that they faced a difficult rescue because the patient was so deeply in the woods on the mountain that they would need to hike for almost two hours just to find him. After that, they would likely need to carry the injured person for several hours up and down the highest mountain in Shenandoah National Park just to get him to a waiting ambulance.

The temperature was approaching 100 degrees with high humidity.

This is exactly the type of rescue that demonstrates the value of airborne law enforcement.

Eagle 2 piloted by Sergeant Kevin Chittick and staffed with Rescue Technicians Paramedic Sergeant Christopher Perkins and Paramedic Officer David Hurley flew eighty miles to this scene.

After the aircraft arrived, the crew spotted the injured person on a rock. The area was surrounded by trees, had steep rocky faces, and unpredictable winds coming off the mountain.

Sgt. Chittick located an area near the patient where he could discharge a Paramedic using a step off. Ofc. Hurley leapt to the ground, and carrying medical supplies hiked to the patient.

After the patient was evaluated and treated, Sgt. Perkins, operating a hoist with a rescue net, lifted the patient out of the scene, and to a waiting ambulance. Once the patient was picked up by the ambulance, Eagle 2 returned to retrieve Ofc. Hurley by hoisting him up with the "Jungle Penetrator."

Dropping the rescue net and penetrator through the trees is hazardous as if the equipment caught on a tree, it would need to be detached from the aircraft.

"The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has announced the selection of Officer Adam E. Zielinski of the United States Park Police as its Officer of the Month for July 2009.

"Established in 1791 by President George Washington, the United States Park Police (USPP) is one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the country. Providing law enforcement services to designated areas within the National Park Service, the USPP's major deployments are in Washington, DC, New York City and San Francisco. In the nation's capital, the agency is tasked with protecting some of the most recognizable and visited monuments and memorials in the world, while providing law enforcement services for some of the busiest roadways in the country.

"In 2003, Officer Adam Zielinski joined the U.S. Park Police. Just six years into his service with the department, Officer Zielinski's file is full of commendations and awards for lifesaving actions as well as his commitment to exceptional police work.

"One shining example occurred on the evening of November 30, 2008, when USPP officers responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. One of the parties involved in the crash had sustained multiple injuries including a compound fracture of his right leg that resulted in excessive blood loss. Observing the man's injuries, Sergeant Russell E. Fennelly immediately contacted Officer Zielinski, a Maryland certified and insured paramedic, for assistance.

"Once on the scene, Officer Zielinski immediately took charge of the situation. Requesting a Hare Traction Splint from the ambulance personnel, Officer Zielinski worked to control the bleeding, treated the victim for shock, and applied the splint to the victim's leg in order to stabilize him enough to be transported. During the surgery to repair his leg, the victim required more than six pints of blood, indicating just how close he had came to dying of blood loss.

"For his efforts, Officer Zielinski received the USPP's Lifesaving Award. The victim was so grateful that in a letter to Park Police Chief Salvatore Lauro he wrote, 'I had a severe injury that would have ended my life if it wasn't for the quick thinking of Officer Adam Zielinski. He should truly be recognized for his knowledge, bravery, quick thinking and caring for others in the community.'

"This lifesaving effort was one of many heroic actions taken by Officer Zielinski during his law enforcement career. Others included jumping into the frigid waters of a creek to make sure everyone was out of an overturned vehicle; keeping a man who was under the influence of alcohol and PCP calm in order to make a peaceful arrest; and using his paramedic skills to save the life of a man in cardiac arrest before backup arrived. In nominating Officer Zielinski for the Officer of the Month Award, Sergeant Mark Schuette wrote, 'Officer Zielinski consistently performs in an exemplary manner as evidenced by his numerous awards, as well as achieving the highest level evaluation in his performance appraisals for 2007 and 2008.'

"As a member of the USPP, Officer Zielinski continues to serve and protect both residents and visitors in the Washington, DC area. He is also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, DC Lodge 1. Officer Zielinski is the second United States Park Police officer to be awarded the NLEOMF's Officer of the Month Award. Officer Jeffrey Muller received the May 1997 award for diving into the Anacostia River to rescue an elderly woman trapped inside a vehicle that had rolled into the icy river.

"Officer Zielinski, along with the other Officers of the Month for 2009, will be honored at a special awards luncheon in Washington, DC, in May 2010 during National Police Week. In addition, their stories of heroism and service will be featured in the Memorial Fund's 2011 calendar."

Pedestrian Fataly Struck Baltimore Washington Parkway

One person is dead after being struck by a car on the Baltimore Washington Parkway in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Shortly after 9:00 pm on August 4, 2009, an adult male pedestrian was attempting to cross the northbound lanes of the Baltimore Washington Parkway just south of Maryland Route 450. He was struck by a northbound car. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

United States Park Police Detectives and Crash Reconstructionists are investigating this scene to ascertain causative factors.

New Assistant Chief Bill Lynch

The United States Park Police is pleased to announce the selection of William Lynch as Assistant Chief of Police.

Bill Lynch has a significant history of service with the Department of the Interior starting with the United States Park Police as a Patrol Officer in 1978. He served in the Central District and Rock Creek Stations.He was later assigned to the newly formed plainclothes narcotics enforcement unit.

After serving as a Sergeant in the George Washington Parkway and Central District Stations, he was promoted to Lieutenant. He was a Shift Commander, Assistant Commander of Planning and Development, and Commander of the Protection Detail for the Secretary of the Department of the Interior. Lynch was detailed to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and commanded the security for the 9th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

When Bill Lynch was promoted to Captain, he was the Regional Law Enforcement Specialist for the National Capital Region, Watch Commander, East District Commander, and Assistant Commander of the Administrative Branch.

Bill Lynch retired from the United States Park Police in 2002 to accept a position as the Bureau Security Officer for the Mineral Management Service of the Department of the Interior. In 2006 Lynch became a Supervisory Special Agent of the Department of the Interior Office of Law Enforcement and Security where he was the Critical Asset Coordinator.

Bill Lynch was detailed to the United States Park Police as the Acting Deputy Chief of Operations through the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.

Assistant Chief Lynch is the second in command of the Nation’s oldest uniformed law enforcement agency responsible for 600 officers and 125 civilians serving in Washington, DC, New York City, and San Francisco.

Assistant Chief Lynch is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and the State University of New York College at Buffalo with a BS in Criminal Justice.

Rock Creek Park Assailant Sought

A woman was assaulted in Rock Creek Park during a morning jog.

The victim of this assault was jogging along the bike path in Rock Creek Park near Bingham Drive on July 22, 2009 at about 7:00 am. The initial assault involved her being grabbed by the assailant.

United States Park Police Detectives are seeking information about this assault. We are looking for an Hispanic male in his 30’s about 5’7” to 5’10” tall. He has a stocky or large build, wavy shoulder length black hair, he seemed to be unshaven, and he smelled of alcohol. He was wearing a cotton t shirt and jeans.

Prior to her being assaulted, the victim recalls passing this suspect on the trail and heard him talking to himself in Spanish.

Serious Motor Vehicle Crash

One driver was seriously injured in a single vehicle motor vehicle crash on Beach Drive.

United States Park Police Officers responded to this crash on Beach Drive just south of the District 3 Substation on July 21, 2009 at about noon.

Officers found that a Jeep had rolled over leaving the lone occupant pinned in the vehicle. A large volume of automotive fluids were also spilled and were contained prior to flowing into Rock Creek.

The District of Columbia Fire Department dispatched an Engine Company, Truck Company, Rescue Squad, Medic Unit, and Command Officials to the scene. These Fire Department units performed a difficult extrication and found the patient suffering from multiple injuries. This patient was flown by United States Park Police Aviation to a local Trauma Center.

District of Columbia Fire Department Hazardous Materials specialists mitigated the fluid spills.

United States Park Police Criminal Investigators and Traffic Crash Reconstructionists responded to assist in the investigation of causitive factors.

When this crash occured, the vehicle also contained two Schnauzers. These friendly dogs were taken by District of Columbia Animal Control for safe keeping after Fire Department staff fed them dog biscuits to gain their trust.

Deputy Chief Jeanne O'Toole

Jeanne O’Toole has been promoted to Deputy Chief of Police for Operations for the United States Park Police.

O’Toole began her career with the National Park Service in 1984 as a seasonal park ranger at Gateway NRA in New York.

In 1987, she entered service with the United States Park Police. She began her career as a uniformed officer in the Glen Echo Station, during which time she was detailed to an assignment as a plainclothes drug officer. While in this plainclothes assignment, O’Toole and her unit received a unit citation award from the chief of police for making 180 arrests in six months, primarily in Meridian Hill Park in Washington.

O’Toole then served as a firearms and physical skills instructor and as a patrol Sergeant. As a Lieutenant, she served as a Shift Commander, Central District Station Commander, Major Crimes Unit Commander, and George Washington Memorial Parkway Station Commander.

Promoted to Captain, O’Toole Commanded the West District and was the Assistant Commander for Criminal Investigations.

When O’Toole was promoted to Major, she served as the Commander of the US Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch.

As Deputy Chief, O’Toole is responsible for a large segment of the United States Park Police.

O’Toole is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Class 209), has received a masters degree from Columbia University in New York, and was a facilitator for the National Park Service leadership seminar program.

Six Escapees Captured By United States Park Police

Six juvenile prisoners escaped from the New Beginnings Youth Center in Laurel, Maryland. This youth detention center is a District of Columbia facility previously known as “Oak Hill.”

These absconders were reported to the United States Park Police at about 2:45pm.

A United States Park Police Officer searching the area of the Baltimore Washington Parkway near Maryland Route 198 saw six juveniles matching the lookout, stopped to investigate, and these six attempted to flee on foot. One absconder struggled with this officer, was able to break free of him, crossed the roadway and joined three others hiding in a drainage pipe.

After a perimeter was established, the United States Park Police Aviation section located these absconders in the drainage pipe. Officers from the Maryland State Police, the Anne Arundel County Police, and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service assisted United States Park Police Officers in apprehending four people.

Anne Arundel County Police located and apprehended the remaining two absconders in the nearby Russet Green neighborhood.

All six were returned to the New Beginnings facility.

Marion Barry Arrested By United States Park Police

District of Columbia Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry was arrested by the United States Park Police.

On July 4th at about 8:45 pm, a United States Park Police Officer was patrolling Anacostia Park in the area of Good Hope Road. This officer was flagged down by a female DC resident who pointed to the occupant of another nearby car. This woman stated that she was being stalked by that other person.

This woman, who requested the assistance of the United States Park Police, was interviewed. After she was interviewed, the person she pointed out was interviewed.

As a result of this investigation, Marion Barry, was arrested.

United States Park Police Detectives consulted with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and subsequently placed the charge of “Misdemeanor Stalking.”

Mr. Barry was interviewed at the United States Park Police Criminal Investigation’s Branch and released on citation with a mandatory court appearance in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.

This release was made after consultation with pretrial services for the District of Columbia.

Do's and Don'ts for the 4th of July Celebration

Do bring lots of water. Dehydration can make a great day not so great quickly. When you get thirsty, you are already getting dehydrated, so sip water frequently.

Do bring sunblock. A bad sunburn will ruin an otherwise enjoyable day.

Do bring some food, but be aware of foodborne illnesses and pack accordingly.

Do bring a Metro Farecard with sufficient balance on it to get home. Waiting in line at the end of the event is no fun.

Do report any suspicous activity to any police officer or uniformed National Park Service employee. We take all reports seriously and welcome the partnership with our community to make this a safe and enjoyable event.

Don't bring firearms, fireworks, alcoholic beverages, glass bottles, tents or other dangerous items. All people and packages are subject to examination to make this event safe for all of us.

Please don't bring your dog. While it is legal to bring your dog, dogs really don't enjoy being in the sun all day, and the fireworks will scare them. If you must bring your dog, it must be on a leash six feet or shorter.

Most of all, bring all your family and friends. There is a lot to do other than watching the fireworks. Make certain to visit the White House Visitor's Center for some special events. The National Mall also will host the Folk Life Festival.

Missing Swimmers Near Great Falls Park

Two swimmers are missing after a late afternoon swim in the Potomac River near Great Falls Park in Cabin John, Maryland.

On June 21, 2009, a group of six swimmers illegally entered the Potomac River south of the main falls near Purple Horse Beach. This group attempted to swim across the river. Four swimmers self rescued and came ashore noticing that two were unaccounted for.

The Montgomery County Department of Fire and Rescue Services deployed a swift water rescue team from the Cabin John Park Fire Department. United States Park Police Aviation also responded to attempt to locate and rescue these missing people.

After a search of over two hours, the search was scaled back to await morning light.

The next day, the river rescue teams and United States Park Police units including Eagle One returned to continue looking.

As of June 23, 2009, the missing swimmers have not been found. For the past several weeks, a significant amount of rain has fallen in the area bringing high water levels to the Potomac River.

The United States Park Police stresses the importance of staying out of the Potomac River in the Gorge area from Great Falls towards Key Bridge as this area has treacherous currents that may be fatal to even strong swimmers.

Metro Disaster In Washington, DC

At least seven people have died in a train accident in Northeast Washington, DC. During the evening rush hour on June 22, 2009, two Metro trains collided on the Red Line between the Fort Totten and Takoma Park Stations.

With over seventy people injured and some in critical condition, the on scene commanders utilized United States Park Police Aviation assets to medevac multiple patients to area trauma centers.

Eagle One was an integral link in the disaster mitigation efforts providing needed advanced critical care and transport for this incident.

Death Investigation In Constitution Gardens

A body was found in Constitution Gardens Park in Washington, DC located east of the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

At about 7:00 am on June 9, 2009, Officers from the United States Park Police located an adult male who was found deceased in the Park area between the 1900 block of Constitution Avenue and the lake of Constitution Gardens.

Washington, DC Metropolitan Police are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The United States Park Police is assisting in the investigation.

All death investigations in Washington, DC are performed by the Metropolitan Police.

Police Involved Shooting

One person is dead following an investigation of an armed subject in the 1200 block of Holbrook Street NE Washington, DC.

On Monday June 8, 2009 at about 8:30 pm, four United States Park Police Detective were investigating information that a subject was in possession of a gun. The suspect was located and he was followed into a nearby alley.

Once in the alley, the United States Park Police Detectives were forced to open fire upon the suspect. The suspect was transported to Washington Hospital Center Medstar where he was pronounced dead.

A firearm was found at the scene.

The Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department is conducting the investigation of this incident. All death investigations in Washington, DC are investigated by Metropolitan Police.

Fatal Car Crash Suitland Parkway

Sunday June 7, 2009 at 11:20 pm, the United States Park Police responded to a single vehicle car crash eastbound Suitland Parkway between Suitland Road and Forestville Road. Officers found a single vehicle in the wood line on its side against a tree with four passengers inside.

The two male passengers in the rear were removed and transported to Prince Georges Hospital Center in Cheverly, Md.

The front seat passenger, an adult female, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, an adult female, was severely pinned with her legs trapped under the dashboard. Prince Georges County Fire Department units from Morningside, District Heights, and Seat Pleasant utilizing two Heavy Rescue Squads, one Engine, two ALS and one BLS unit spent over two hours extricating this person from the car. She was transported by United States Park Police Aviation Eagle 1 to Washington Hospital Center Medstar with serious injuries.

The decedent is Keyanna Bowser, 19 years old, of Capitol Heights, Maryland.

The United States Park Police Criminal Investigations Branch and Crash Reconstructionists are continuing their investigation. No causitive factors have been determined at this time.

Komen Race For The Cure Road Closures

On Saturday June 6, 2009 the United States Park Police will implement several road closures to accommodate the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure.

• Constitution Avenue will be closed from 15th Street to 23rd Street NW at 7:00 am and reopened at 10:00 am.

• Madison and Jefferson Drives in the National Mall will be closed from 15th Street to 3rd Street at 6:00 am and reopened at 10:00 am.

• 15th and 17th Streets will be closed from Independence Avenue to Constitution Avenue at 7:00 am and reopened at 10:00 am.

• Other street closures will be made by the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department.

United States Park Police officers will be on site to assist visitors in these areas.
